This Veterinarian job in Rwanda plays a key role in supporting this mission.
Position: Veterinarian – Full-Time
RICA is seeking a qualified, experienced, and motivated Veterinarian to oversee animal health services, manage the Veterinary Clinic, support academic training, and contribute to research and community outreach.
The ideal candidate should be passionate about agricultural education and committed to hands-on student mentorship while delivering high-quality veterinary medical care.
Key Responsibilities
1. Veterinary Clinic Administration and Management
The successful candidate will manage and oversee operations of the RICA Veterinary Clinic.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing clinic facilities, equipment, and infrastructure
- Providing clinical diagnosis, treatment, and preventive veterinary care
- Organizing procurement and management of veterinary drugs and medical supplies
- Maintaining accurate clinical records and preparing detailed reports
- Monitoring inventory of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment
- Developing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Ensuring compliance with veterinary regulations and biosecurity standards
- Preparing and managing the Veterinary Clinic budget
- Conducting laboratory testing in collaboration with the Analytical Laboratory
- Supporting continuous improvement of service delivery
Strong experience in veterinary clinic management in Rwanda will be an added advantage.
2. Animal Health Services
The Veterinarian will oversee animal health and welfare across RICA’s teaching farms and enterprises.
Core duties include:
- Performing clinical examinations and laboratory diagnostics
- Delivering treatment, disease prevention, and disease control programs
- Conducting minor and major surgical procedures
- Providing emergency veterinary care
- Ensuring high animal welfare standards
- Supervising students and support staff during clinical and field activities
- Ensuring compliance with biosecurity protocols
- Collaborating with livestock enterprise leaders and the One Health Thread Coordinator
This role requires practical experience in both large animal and small animal veterinary practice.
3. Academic and Student Training Support
As an educational institution, RICA prioritizes experiential learning. The Veterinarian will:
- Provide hands-on training in animal health interventions
- Support practical sessions and laboratory training
- Mentor first-year students in animal husbandry
- Demonstrate technical veterinary procedures
- Promote safe clinical practices

4. Research and Community Outreach
The Veterinarian will also contribute to research and extension services, including:
- Participating in research projects (data collection, analysis, reporting)
- Supporting community veterinary outreach programs

Minimum Qualifications
To qualify for this Veterinarian position in Rwanda, applicants must have:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM), or equivalent degree
- Degree from a recognized institution
- Registration and valid license with the Rwanda Council of Veterinary Doctors (RCVD)
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
Candidates with the following experience will be prioritized:
- Minimum of 5 years clinical veterinary practice experience
- Exposure to both large and small animals
- Experience handling complex clinical cases
- Experience performing surgical procedures
- Practical experience in artificial insemination and embryo transfer
- Strong knowledge of disease prevention and treatment protocols
- Hands-on experience in smallholder and commercial livestock systems
Veterinary Clinic Management Experience
Applicants should demonstrate:
- Experience managing or supervising a veterinary clinic
- Pharmaceutical procurement and inventory control knowledge
- Familiarity with regulatory compliance in veterinary services
- Knowledge of laboratory diagnostics and record management systems
- Strong understanding of biosecurity and animal welfare standards

The selected candidate will report to the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Extension and Applied Research and may be required to participate in after-hours emergency care.
